Newborough: Have Your Say on the Future of the Car Park and Toilets

Isle of Anglesey County Council has commissioned Lafan to carry out a consultation with the local community about the future of the car park and disused toilet block on Church Street, Newborough.

Update: The consultation is now closed

Thank you to everyone who shared your views on possible plans for the car park and toilet block in Newborough. The consultation period has now ended, and we are analysing responses to prepare a final report for Isle of Anglesey County Council. The findings will help shape the next steps for the site.

We will update this page once the final report is available.

Summary of the 3 Options

  • Option 1 – Maximise parking space

Use the whole site to provide parking for both residents and visitors, with reserved bays for locals and EV charging points.

This option has been formulated in response to a significant number of local residents who expressed their concerns about the lack of parking in the village – particularly during the busy summer months.

The scheme would see the demolition of the disused public toilets (which have not been used for over 10 years) and the reorganisation of the car park to create more space for local people. A specific section would be reserved for residents with a special permit, with a gate controlling access, ensuring that places are available for those living in the village. To address the concerns about vandalism and anti-social behaviour this area will be lit up with solar lamps.

The front of the car park would accommodate 17 cars and 2 disabled parking spaces – ideal for local people who want to drop in for shopping or visiting family or friends.

An electric charging point has also been included, acknowledging that some residents will consider buying an electric car in the future, but without the possibility of installing a charging point at home – particularly along Church Street where the houses are close to the main road.

As the development area has been extended a number of trees and shrubs (which have grown wild on the site) will be removed, provision for improving the ecology and biodiversity of the site is included here.

  • Option 2 – Parking + community business

Build a small unit on part of the site (e.g. bike hire or café), alongside some parking for visitors and EV chargers.

This option also responds to a significant number of local residents who expressed their concerns about the lack of parking in the village – especially during the busy summer months. It also considers that there is an opportunity to set up a business here - an expression of interest was received from one local company.

The scheme would see the demolition of part of the disused public toilet building (which has not been used for over 10 years) extended northwards and converted into a business unit. This building may include space for the provision of a public toilet on site. Parking space has been set aside for users of the proposed business.

The car park at the rear of the site has been rearranged to create more dedicated parking spaces for residents with a special permit, with a gate controlling access, ensuring space is available for those living in the village.

In addition, the front of the car park would offer space for 4 cars and 2 disabled parking spaces – ideal for local people who want to drop in to shop or visit family or friends.

An electric charging point has also been included, acknowledging that some residents will consider buying an electric car in the future, but without the possibility of installing a charging point at home – particularly along Church Street where the houses are close to the main road.

Again, there will be improvements to the ecology and biodiversity of the site.

  • Option 3 – Transport hub starter plan

A mixed-use parking layout including campervan spaces and EV infrastructure. This would lay the groundwork for a future transport hub connected to nearby land.

This proposal is a long-term option to the site but again provides dedicated parking spaces for residents with a special permit, with a gate controlling access, ensuring spaces are available for those living in the village.

The scheme would see the demolition of the disused public toilets (which have not been used for over 10 years) and the reorganisation of the car park to create more space for local people. In addition to the residents' car park, the car park at the front of the site will offer space for 6 cars and 2 disabled parking spaces with an electric charging point also included.

This option offers the potential to tie the development into adjacent land owned by the Isle of Anglesey County Council. This land is to the north and west of the site and provides a connection to public trails in the area.

Towards the Church Street boundary there is a pull in area for a shuttle bus with a stop- should the intention for visitors to park away from the village materialise, this proposal ensures that there is a waiting area within the village to attract visitors towards local businesses.

To meet overnight parking requirements for camping vehicles, three dedicated spaces have been included along with the provision of water, electricity and sewer connections. These spaces will bring in income while offering better control over unregulated camping in the area. It will also be a way to promote local businesses.
